What are natural dyes?
Natural dyes are colorants derived from plants, insects, and minerals. They have been used for thousands of years to create vibrant and enduring colors on natural fibers like cotton, silk, and wool. Unlike synthetic dyes, natural dyes are biodegradable and often have unique variations, offering a sustainable and artistic approach to coloring textiles. Common natural dye sources include roots, leaves, bark, flowers, and insects like cochineal.

How do I care for naturally dyed goods?
To give your goods the longest life, avoid excessive direct sunlight or exposure to strongly acidic/alkaline substances (e.g., citrus juice, cleaning products). Naturally dyed items can be light sensitive and pH sensitive. This is why it is recommended to wash your goods with a pH-neutral detergent, like Seventh Generation.

Note:  Indigo-dyed items may be prone to crocking, which is when color transfers with agitation

What is a pH-neutral detergent?
A pH-neutral detergent is a cleaning product that has a pH level of around 7, which is considered neutral on the pH scale. This means it is neither acidic nor alkaline. These detergents are gentle on fabrics and are often recommended for delicate textiles, like those dyed with natural dyes, because they help maintain the vibrancy of colors and the integrity of the fibers. Using a pH-neutral detergent can extend the life of your naturally dyed items while preserving their beauty.  

Do natural dyes fade?
Natural dyes can fade over time, but the degree of fading depends on the fiber, the dye, and the mordant used. In my work, I focus on creating a strong bond between the dye and the fiber by preparing the fabric using mordants, tannins, and plant dyes that are naturally more wash- and lightfast. Compounds like anthraquinones (found in madder) and flavonoids (found in weld and onion skins) are especially durable.
Historically, natural dyes were the only option until synthetic dyes were invented in the 19th century. When applied thoughtfully, natural dyes can produce rich, lasting colors that develop character over time.
